Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important official commented the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
