European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
