Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
