TikTok Grants Users Authority to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to lessen the quantity of AI-created videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a global launch. This shift coincides with a rise in AI content, fueled by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.

Our research shows that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” said a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

The service shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 m pieces of content are added to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they watch by accessing the content preference option in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that are already be modified under the tool cover news, clothing, aesthetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies require users to label lifelike artificially created content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the app will henceforth apply an artificially created tag to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This action is designed to deter users from seeking to circumvent the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is additionally establishing a $2 million awareness program for professionals and institutions to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will assist non-profit groups dedicated to teaching computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in Britain. It is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in London, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content before it has to be seen by people. The platform reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
